THE STORY

The story of Rompe Mar begins in Peru, in the Lunahuaná Valley, nestled between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. This valley is the birthplace of our pisco and the name it carries. It’s a place where the Andes mountains meet the Pacific Ocean.

1929 - a spirit is born

In 1929, Don Benedicto Peña arrived in Lunahuaná, drawn to its raw beauty and rich distilling traditions. He founded Bodega Santa María, inspired by the artisanal process of crafting pisco—a spirit with depth and soul. Don Benedicto’s way of distilling is still infusing every drop we produce.

EARLy DAYS

When the vine phylloxera plague struck and others abandoned distilling, Don Benedicto Peña refused to let our heritage fade. His grit and relentless focus on craftsmanship became the cornerstone of our distillery.

He built the distillery on a simple philosophy: make every drop count.

For nearly a century, the Peña family has devoted itself to perfecting the art of pisco. From the careful cultivation of grapes to the precision of distillation, every step is steeped in tradition.

Today, we use modern technology where it matters most. We’re not stuck in the past but rather blend the philosophy of Don Benedicto with modern day advances available today.

the distillery TODAY

Today, Don Benedicto’s grandson, José Antonio Espinoza Peña – affectionately known as “Pepe” (the guy on the left)- and his wife, Giuliana Mancini, lead the distillery.

They have modernised operations while preserving the soul and artistry that have defined our pisco for decades. Their efforts have elevated Rompe Mar into an international symbol of Lunahuaná’s distilling excellence, now sipped & enjoyed accrossed Mexico & Europe.

THE BRAND

“Rompe Mar” translates to “breaks the sea” in Spanish, paying homage to the waves driven by the Humboldt ocean current that crash almost against the rocky walls of this majestic mountain range, imparting a slight sea spray to our grapes.

THE MEDUSA

During a dive off the Peruvian coast following our first visit to the distillery, we encountered a jellyfish. Fascinating and alluring, jellyfish can also be potentially enchanting, much like our pisco. Although delightful, if consumed excessively, it can sting as much as a jellyfish.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

Rooted in tradition and driven by adventure, we embrace life’s unexpected moments with the same daring spirit that brought us to Lunahuaná.

With every bottle, we honor Pepe’s vision of crafting exceptional pisco while inspiring connections and creating memories worth savoring.
